Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink?

We know that water is very important to us, right?  After all, we are over 60% water!  In addition, our planet is also mostly water.  So when it comes to tap water vs. bottled water, which do you think is healthiest for ourselves and our planet.
I recently watched a documentary called "Tapped" and it gave me more insight to the debate over bottled water.  Here is the link on Hulu: http://www.hulu.com/watch/192680/tapped
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the controversial topic and if the documentary changed your mind on bottled water in any way~

Freedom of Choice or are we good little Sheeple?

There are many reasons that we buy the products that we do and one factor is advertisements.  Every day we are bombarded with images and messages that try to influence the purchases that we make.  Everything from the type of cars we buy to the particular foods we eat.  Although we would like to think that we have 'freedom of choice', do we really?  Take a look at the video "Mind Control" and just maybe your thoughts will change!
Video: "Mind Control"  can be watched on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f29kF1vZ62o
After watching the video ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do you choose certain products whether they are on sale or not?
2. If there were generic products that were identical to the products you currently buy would you purchase them instead?  Why or why not?
3. Are there certain restaurants that you prefer to eat at than others?  What is your reason for going to that particular restaurant?
4. Do you believe products that cost more are better?  Why or why not?
5. Are there any brand name products that you are loyal to?  Why?
6. How much influence do you think advertisements have on your choices?  How much do you think they influence the choices of children?
7. Most importantly, how much influence do you think advertisements have had on the obesity epidemic?

Effort to Reduce Salt in Food Could Save Lives

  • tags: no_tag

    • A voluntary effort by the U.S. food service industry to reduce salt in processed foods could have far-reaching implications for the health of the U.S. population, preventing strokes and heart attacks in nearly a million Americans and saving $32.1 billion in medical costs, according to a new study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.

It would be great if the food industry lowered the sodium content in foods!  We should also read labels to ensure that we are not getting tons of salt in the foods we eat.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to the new blog for my website Nutrication! Nutrication is a website that I originally created to help give my students at Cal State LA access to my notes and Power Point lecture slides. Since I was just an adjunct professor, I did not have my own page on the CSULA website.

Eventually the website grew to include not only information for my classes but also information about nutrition that I felt would be interesting for my students. Soon it became more of a nutrition education resource for anyone who was interested!

With the help of social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook and Linked In) I found that I was reaching a wider audience and have since began to expand the site to include information for an international audience.

The purpose of Nutrication is to help educate people about nutrition and offer them resources to allow them to learn more about healthy eating and lifestyle habits. The name "Nutrication" comes from blending the word nutrition and education together. Though I thought I was being clever, nutrication I found out is actually a word! It means "the act or manner of feeding". Since Nutrication's purpose is to 'feed knowledge' to individuals I felt the name is appropriate!

I am going to try to update this blog every month (if my schedule permits!) with information that I hope that you will find interesting! If there is a topic that you would like me to discuss (pertaining to nutrition and/or health), please email me at obigelow@nutrication.net.

I hope that your New Year is healthy and happy!
Sincerely,
Orville Bigelow, M.S., R.D.
